Berlin (dpa) - The TV station RTL wants to continue broadcasting the Formula 1 races after the coming season.
"We are in talks," said RTL spokesman Matthias Bolhöfer of the German press agency about the current award process for the rights of 2021. "Formula 1 is and remains one of the most popular and most seen serial sports formats," said the RTL man.
Due to the still valid RTL contract, the most important motorsport series will continue to run completely on free television in the season beginning in mid-March. At the same time, the pay-TV broadcaster Sky is broadcasting, which, according to dpa information, is also interested in a new Formula 1 contract.
In other TV markets, individual races only run exclusively on pay TV. In the UK and Ireland, television viewers have only been able to watch Formula 1 live since summer 2019 if they have a Sky subscription. The only exception is the UK Grand Prix, which continues to be broadcast on free TV.
