Gelsenkirchen (dpa) - Former national soccer player Gerald Asamoah has reacted with incomprehension that the match overshadowed by racist insults in the Portuguese league between Vitoria Guimarães and FC Porto has continued.
"I take my hat off that Moussa Marega left the field. What makes me wonder is that the game went on," the former Bundesliga professional and current U23 manager at FC Schalke 04 told Deutschlandfunk on Wednesday.
Marega had left the booth early on Sunday after scoring goals for FC Porto due to racial insults. His teammates continued to play, however, and the game was not abandoned. According to Asamoah, however, each affected player must decide how to deal with such a situation. When he was hostile to stadiums in the past, he continued to play. "If I had left the square, they would have felt it as a victory. I didn't want to," said Asamoah.
The recent racist events in the football stadium have given the 41-year-old, who was born in Ghana, a thought that made him think: "I thought we were a long way from tolerance and openness. But unfortunately we stopped again or there are always some Idiots who haven't learned anything. "
