Even before the Euro 2020 a bang could go through the football world. A new offside rule is in the starting blocks. It would be a radical change.

Even before the Euro 2020 a bang could go through the football world. A new offside rule is in the starting blocks. It would be a radical change.

  • The evaluation of offside positions became more and more precise by the VAR .
  • This resulted in lengthy millimeter decisions .
  • Arsène Wenger wants a new offside rule for the EURO 2020 .

Munich - Many football fans are fed up: a goal is scored, but the cheer is interrupted by the video referee. After many minutes of deliberation, the referee sees that the striker was on the toe with a tip of his toe and the goal is withdrawn.

A scenario that happens like this, or something similar, in the usual regular way. Even the official ones have noticed that this is simply not fun for many - just ask Mario Gomez.

Change in the offside rule: UEFA has already discussed

UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin has therefore already made a proposal for a rule change. He pondered over a tolerance range. But the rules keepers of the IFAB (International Football Association Board) were probably too vague.

A clear regulation without discretion was needed, so there was already a mini change in VAR handling with offside decisions in the Bundesliga. However, FIFA Director for Global Security, none other than coach legend Arsène Wenger, has now worked out a huge new rule .

Offside rule: A millimeter can decide

A very brief digression beforehand. How does the offside work at the moment? An attacking player is offside when a body part that can be scored legally is closer to the opposing goal than the penultimate defender. By the way, the goalkeeper does not have a special position in this rule.

The problem with the current regulation, which leads to the frequent millimeter decisions , is that the striker only has to bring a tiny bit of his nose closer to the opposing box to be completely offside.

Arsène Wenger demands new offside rule: what is the same amount?

Arsène Wenger now spoke to The Times about the planned change . The same height should be redefined , said the 70-year-old: "You are not offside if a body part with which you can score is still behind the last defender or at the same height ."

After a short test phase, this change could take effect on June 1, before the European Championship . At least if it is accepted on February 29 at the official IFAB rules meeting. Arsène Wenger asks to make her talk there.

For IFAB managing director Lukas Brud , but no discussion. “No chance,” quotes the sports show, “at the General Assembly, only changes to the rules that were previously discussed in our committees can be voted on.” For example, the introduction of a concussion protocol.

New offside rule: It would be the most radical change in 30 years

Quite understandable that the rule-keepers are asking for a little more time than they would have after the sudden proposal , after all , that would be the most radical change in the offside rule in 30 years .

Since its introduction, the offside rule has been relaxed more and more, until 1990 it was decided that the same amount should no longer be offside. Previously, the striker had to stay behind the defender.
