Tottenham-Leipzig tops / flops: Werner strikes again, Dele Alli invisible

2020-02-19T22:54:08.119Z

Thanks to a penalty from Werner, Leipzig won on Tottenham lawn in the knockout stages of the Champions League (0-1). Find the tops and flops of this meeting.

The tops

Werner punishes the Spurs
Leipzig's lethal weapon struck again. Scorer three times during the group stage, Timo Werner scored the only goal of the match, on a penalty kick transformed with composure at the start of the second period. The German international, omnipresent in the game, wandered on the front of the attack and hurt very much the London defense. Author of a superb inspiration on the opportunity missed by Schick after the hour of play.

Leipzig had wings
Arranged in 3-4-3, Leipzig perfectly spread the game on the wings. The two pistons had a big game. Dangerous to enter, Angelino reigned to the left. His incessant climbs and his understanding with Werner have hurt Tottenham very much. And on the right side, Nordi Mukiele also shone. Very solid (80% of duels won) and enterprising throughout the match. The former Montpellier player has made enormous progress since leaving the Bundesliga.

Two inspired guards
Clearly domineering, Leipzig was nevertheless saved several times by the interventions of Peter Gulacsi. The Hungarian goalkeeper notably had to take the big game to repel a free kick from Lo Celso on his post in the second half. Unlike his counterpart, Hugo Lloris has failed to keep his clean sheet. But the captain of Spurs has nothing to reproach himself for. Without his interventions before Angelino, Werner or Schick, Tottenham could have conceded a larger setback.

The flops

The horrible first period of the Spurs
Logically beaten, Tottenham has long undergone total control of Leipzig. The Spurs, feverish and drafts, ran after the ball for almost an hour. And conceded no less than thirteen shots in the first period, unheard of at home in the Champions League (Opta). José Mourinho's men finally waited to be led to go up a notch and display a more conquering face. Waking up too late, with no effect on the bulletin board…

But where was Dele Alli?
Like Spurs, Deli Alli lived a dirty evening. The English international, aligned first on the left wing, then in the second half, did not show anything good. Far too discreet (28 balloons touched) until its release in the 65th minute. Furious, No. 11 Spurs let out his anger by settling in the stands.

Aurier exceeded
Serge Aurier also missed his match. In the front row against Werner and Angelino, the right side of the Spurs could not keep up its lane. Exceeded defensively, the former Parisian also displayed an enormous awkwardness. With only 64% of successful passes and 25 lost balls (Opta). No player has done worse.
