Woodies end the season with two losses

Missed the goal or made a step forward? The Dachau Woodpeckers players didn't know that at first. In any case, the head hung down after the Woodies had lost the final game of the district league season 2019/2020 against the Munich EK with 4: 5 after the 1: 3 loss at EV Mittenwald less than 24 hours later. The penultimate place in the table was thus sealed.

The defeat against the MEK was exemplary for the past season of the Woodies. The motto was: Just over. "We have made a significant step forward, only a few small things were missing," said trainer Jürgen Fleißner.

One of those little things was the quality at the end. “We had enough opportunities, but we didn't take them too often. Sometimes we fired at the goalkeeper, sometimes just missed it, ”continued Fleißner.

This was not entirely unexpected for the Woodies coach, because Dominik Retzer, Elias Maier, Florian Winhart and Alex Christian, the four best scorers of the 2018/2019 season, had left the club in summer 2019. "These are exits that you cannot simply replace," said Fleißner.

The ESV coach changed the game system, which was noticeable on paper: The Woodies scored 49 goals, 12 less than in the previous season, but also conceded only 74 goals - 13 fewer than in 2018/2019.

Fleißner emphasizes: “There has been no game this season in which we were shot down. It was different in the last few years. "

In the penultimate season game at EV Mittenwald, which fought for third place in the table, the Dachau fought well. And this despite the fact that they came with only nine field players and a goalkeeper.

"Many were injured, sick or prevented from working," reports Fleißner. The small Woodies team did brilliantly. The guests kept up for a long time. Jonas Rimann equalized Peter Frank's (7th) EVM lead in the 23rd minute. Even after Michael Hornsteiner's 1: 2, the guests believed in their chance. At the end of the day the strength waned. Then the Dachau could not answer Hornsteiners 1: 3 in the 48th minute. Fleissner was nevertheless satisfied. "The boys really got into it and did it really well," said the Woodies coach. The game in Mittenwald took a lot of power because the players got much more ice age than a game with three or even four rows. No advantage before the final game against the Munich EK.

Some people wanted to see this duel. “There were really a lot of spectators. And some came after the game and said it was a really interesting ice hockey game, ”said Fleißner. He himself spoke of "advertising for the district league ice hockey."

His team went into the game with 14 players - and was the better team in the early stages. Maximilian Braun (1st) and Johannes Karl with a double pack (14th / 15th) shot a Dachau 3-0 lead. Not for the first time this season, the concentration of the woodies did not last over the entire third. In the last minute before the first break, Lukas Voit reduced to 1: 3.

Shortly after the change of sides, Munich's Dominik Meierl scored the 2: 3 goal (21st). In the final minute of the middle section, Meierl and Thibault Frachon turned the game with two goals within 30 seconds (40th). The goals of the Dachau were not thrown off the track by the goals conceded. In the 51st minute Ferdinand Fleißner scored 4: 4. The Woodies had to win, however, to pass the Munich EK in the table and finish the season in seventh place.

In the final phase, coach Fleißner considered taking his goalkeeper off the ice in favor of a sixth outfield player. He decided against it. "We had no real pressure. And they often freed themselves well. The risk was too high for me, ”said Fleißner. When Nikolas Schünemann scored 5: 4 for the guest from the state capital a few seconds before the final siren, it was clear: The Dachauers will finish the season in eighth place and thus as penultimate. “It doesn't look good on paper, but we have taken a step forward in some areas. If we can improve the quality of the goal, there is more to it, ”says Fleißner. Next season he wants to start the next attack with the club for a better position.
