London (AP) - Almost eight years after the lost "Finale dahom" in Munich, FC Bayern has an explosive reunion with Chelsea in London.
It is the first show of strength of both clubs in the Champions League since the legendary final on May 19, 2012, which the German soccer record champions lost 3-4 in the home Allianz Arena after a dramatic penalty shootout. After 120 minutes it was 1: 1.
There was a revenge at Stamford Bridge before the first knockout round first leg on Tuesday (9:00 p.m.). In the final for the 2013 UEFA Super Cup, Champions League winner FC Bayern with coach Pep Guardiola defeated Europa League winner FC Chelsea with coach José Mourinho in Prague - and it was another soccer thriller.
On August 30, 2013, the 17,686 spectators in the sold-out Eden Arena experienced another game with blatant twists, which had to be decided again on penalties. "The team was incredible. Today I realized why they won everything last season," said Guardiola, who had taken over the Munich team from triple coach Jupp Heynckes a few weeks earlier.
Bayern were twice behind. But Franck Ribéry and Javi Martínez - seconds before the extension ended - equalized Chelsea's lead goals from Fernando Torres and Eden Hazard, respectively. And unlike in the penalty shootout 15 months earlier, all five Bayern shooters - Alaba, Kroos, Lahm, Ribéry and Shaqiri - then met. National goalkeeper Manuel Neuer saved Chelsea's tenth and final penalty from Romelu Lukaku.
"This time we had good nerves," said Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in his banquet speech. "We have experienced something wonderful. It was by far the best Super Cup game I have ever seen." The Champions League revenge is now happening.
