Doha - Despite ongoing criticism from abroad, the organizers of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and FIFA see themselves on a good course. "Qatar wants to impress the world and is well on the way to doing so," said President Gianni Infantino on Tuesday on the 1000-day countdown in a message from the World Association. At such an early stage, the emirate was "as far as no other host before" and would be a "cultural and social bridge builder", the Swiss promised.
World Cup 2022 in Qatar: "Joy, but also tension"
Human rights organizations have, among other things, been complaining about the poor treatment of guest workers in Qatar since the tournament was awarded in December 2010, accompanied by allegations of corruption. For climatic reasons, the World Cup tournament will not take place for the first time in summer, but from November 21 to December 18, 2022. This causes resentment in the European professional leagues, who have to adjust their season to the schedule.
“We have been involved in this tournament every day for ten years. Personally, I'm looking forward to the World Cup with a lot of joy, but also some tension, which will undoubtedly be the best ever. We will do everything we can to ensure that the first World Cup in the Middle East and the Arab world will set standards in the organization of major sporting events, ”said organization chief Hassan al-Thawadi.
According to the organizers, the infrastructure is already well advanced. Two of the eight stadiums are in operation, and three more are scheduled to open this year. The expansion of the subway should enable fans to travel smoothly through the emirate in just under three years. Qualification for the World Cup begins in Europe in March 2021.
