Berlin (AP) - Lea Sophie Friedrich won the gold medal in the 500-meter time trial at the World Track Cycling Championships in Berlin.
The 20-year-old won on Saturday in 33.121 seconds ahead of the Mexican Jessica Salazar Valles (33.154) and the Italian Miriam Vece (33.171), making her the youngest world champion over this distance. Pauline Grabosch (33,179) from Erfurt took fourth place.
Friedrich is the second German 500m world champion after Miriam Welte, who won the title in 2014 and 2018. Welte ended her career last year. For Friedrich it is the second World Cup title after the success in the team sprint when she was used in the qualification.
