Breathe deeply with Michael Schumacher, his family and his fans. The kart track threatened by demolition, on which the Formula 1 world champion learned his trade, will probably remain.

  • Michael Schumacher suffered a traumatic brain injury after a skiing accident in 2013.
  • The 51-year-old is the most successful driver in Formula 1 history .
  • His go- kart track , on which he learned to drive, was to give way to lignite mining .

Many fans of ex-Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher have long hoped for this message. Around two years ago, it was to be expected that the cult kart track of the former record racing driver in Kerpen-Manheim in North Rhine-Westphalia would have to make way for open-cast mining. There were already concrete plans for the takeover of the site by RWE Power , the date at the end of October 2020 was already set. But then the tide turned.

Michael Schumacher's first racetrack: “Hambi” environmental activists helped maintain his legendary go-kart track

The Kerpen district of Manheim is located in the mining area of the Hambach open-cast mine and, according to the plans of the energy company RWE, will have to give way by 2022; a resettlement financed by RWE has been underway since 2012. The house in which Schumacher lived until the 1990s also fell victim to the plans of the energy company. RWE recently searched in vain for a replacement site for the go-kart track.

The “Michael Schumacher Kart and Event Center”, called Erftlandring , its 550 members and many Schumi fans represent an important piece of the past and motorsport history. But not only the operators and members of the kart track had protested, especially the numerous environmentalists who wanted to protect the Hambacher Forest and the neighboring Steinheide from the brown coal excavators were involved in the sudden turn. Ultimately, it was the coal agreement between the federal government, the federal states and energy companies that prevented the forthcoming deforestation of the "Hambi".

Michael Schumacher's first race track: RWE spokesman gives the green light - the kart club boss remains cautious

Michael Humacher's go-kart track also lives on with the Hambacher Forest and maintains a tangible memory of the young years of the former Formula 1 star. RWE spokesman Guido Steffen told the Express that he "assumes that the go-kart track in Steinheide can be maintained". The spokesman also said that "the club and we can now start conversations in peace and see what happens next".

Kart club chairman Gerhard Noack is still enjoying the good news with caution. "Until we have officially confirmed this from RWE, we will not comment on it. Of course we are happy if this happens, ”he told the Express .

Michael Schumacher's fans in particular will be delighted to receive the cult site. The 51-year-old, who has had a traumatic brain injury since a ski accident in 2013 and has not shown himself in public since then, began his motorsport career at the Erftlandring together with his brother Ralf. For the two drivers, the career that started not far from Kerpen should culminate in Formula 1.

Recently, Michael’s wife Corinna Schumacher was in the headlines due to an incorrectly quoted quote.
