UEFA is trying everything for everything so as not to have to suspend or end its competitions. The organizing body of the Champions League and the Europa League is holding emergency meetings this Thursday with the main stakeholders in football (players, clubs, leagues, etc.) to take stock of the coronavirus epidemic and its impact on competitions, as it formalized in a press release. PSG, qualified Wednesday against Dortmund, obviously follows the situation very closely.
Several games have already been postponed and most of them must be played behind closed doors. However, while insistent rumors of suspension of competitions circulate, this decision has not (yet) been taken, according to our information from meetings already held. UEFA wishes to resolve the situation on a case-by-case basis for the Champions League and Europa League return matches, as well as for the Euro play-offs scheduled from 26 to 31 March.
No decision for Euro 2020 adjustments
However, UEFA has decided to make a new point next Tuesday (March 17), to assess the situation, and possibly adapt its position. In the meantime, the clubs and the organizer will try to find solutions to contest the maximum number of games next week.
UEFA is still looking for a place to host the Juventus Turin-Lyon match after being refused several times, and must manage the case of a contaminated Turin player (Daniele Rugani). The Manchester City - Real Madrid match is particularly threatened after the quarantine of Real Madrid players following a case in the basketball section. The match Barcelona - Naples is also exposed, due to the ban on direct flights between Italy and Spain.
No decision has yet been made on arrangements for Euro 2020, which will take place in June and July across Europe.
