The season of table tennis players at TTC Birkland is currently only interrupted. Where they will play next season is already clear.

Birkland - The table tennis players at TTC Birkland are uncertain. In contrast to the Bavarian Table Tennis Association, the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) has not yet declared the season over due to the corona pandemic. For now, the season is only interrupted until April 19. And since the Oberliga Bayern, in which Birkland plays, is regulated by the DTTB, it is still unclear how to deal with the outstanding games.

"I assume that the season will not continue," said TTC team spokeswoman Lena Berchtold. "We have to wait and see how it will be regulated." Until then, the athletes have to pass the time differently. "Since the game was suspended, I haven't had a racket in my hand," admits Berchtold. She was jogging and keeps fit with exercises at home. In her opinion, however, allowing the current standings to stand is not fair. Alone, because some teams have played different numbers of games in the current season.

Berchtold satisfied with the season so far

The TTC is currently in second place with 23 points from 14 games. The entitles to participate in the promotion of advancement. "Ascending is not our wish and our goal," says Berchtold. "If we qualify for the relegation, we will not compete." In addition to work and family, long journeys that would require an ascent would not be possible. "We are currently feeling comfortable in the top division," says the team spokeswoman. Therefore, the Birkländer would give more ambitious teams priority.

The table tennis players are satisfied with the way the season has gone so far. Berchtold describes the services as “solid”. "They meet our expectations." Only with the start of the second half of the season did Lena Berchtold struggle. There was only a 7: 7 draw against Versbach and Wombach. "We left points behind," she says.

TTC Birkland keeps competitors at bay

Due to various illnesses, Birkland could not compete with the best. Instead, Irene Berchtold helped out. "We are grateful that she helped us to avoid a fine that would have existed if we had only played with three players," said Berchtold. "However, we also know that she has no chance of winning a game in this league."

In full line-up, the TTC women showed what they could do against Thannhausen, for example. Birkland won 8: 5 against the table neighbors in mid-February. In the next game, before the season was interrupted, the TTC would have played against leaders Regenstauf. "That would have been exciting," Berchtold is certain.

Birkland's Karin Stumpfecker won most games in the entire league

On the Birkland side, it would have been Karin Stumpfecker who would have made the most of it. Birkland's number one with 32 wins this season has the most of all players in the Oberliga Bayern. Their record (32: 5) is the second best in the league. "Above all, she played an incredibly good preliminary round," says Berchtold. Stumpfecker was only beaten by two foreigners who were paid to play in the top division. For the first time in years, she started the season injury-free. "You can see what that makes," says Berchtold, who is by no means surprised by Stumpfecker's strong performance.
