Leipzig (dpa) - The sports betting industry is in a crisis in view of the coronavirus pandemic and the lack of events.
"We are very worried. The business is practically down to zero. Not only in the betting shops that have to be closed. But also online because hardly anything is happening anywhere. It is a global shutdown," said Mathias Dahms, who President of the German Sports Betting Association, the German Press Agency. "The sales volume has decreased by over 90 percent."
The main concern of the umbrella organization of 16 companies active in Germany is small business owners who operate one or more betting shops. "In principle, these currently have no income. Large international providers may have a cushion," said Dahms. At the moment it is difficult to say how things will go on.
