Aachen (AP) - Formula 1 track architect Hermann Tilke regrets the unusual premiere of the Vietnam Grand Prix this weekend.

"It hurts so much, because a lot of us work on it. We still have engineers and architects on site who are doing the dismantling. It has been so passionate about it for almost a year and a half, also because a building doesn't always go smoothly" , said Tilke (64) of the German Press Agency in an interview.

The graduate civil engineer also designed the new street circuit in Hanoi for the top motorsport class. However, the premiere was postponed due to the corona virus crisis. The first eight races of the actually 22 Grand Prix Formula 1 calendar were canceled. "It hurts a lot that this crowning finale is missing. When the first car hits the track during the first free practice session and the race starts on Sunday, these are always highlights," said Tilke, who has 19 Formula 1 cars in his office alone. Courses either built entirely yourself or played a major role in shaping them.

In total there are 92 race tracks. "Building is always meant to last for a long time, whether it's a single-family home or a race track," said Tilke, who once started making improvements to the Nürburgring.
