UEFA threatens to exclude failed championship teams from European Cups

2020-04-03T12:21:56.945Z

According to the Associated Press, EUFA will force the National Leagues to finish their championship. Under penalty of prohibiting the chipped leagues teams from participating in the next European Cups.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to plague the world, and to cripple sport as a whole. The challenge for the federations will now be to know what to do with the championships already started. For the moment, each resumption date is systematically postponed, and no one can say on what date it will be possible to resume. If ever this is possible.

Championships forced to end

But it will be. Why ? Because the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) will force them to do so. This Thursday, the Associated Press agency claims to have obtained a letter written by the Federation of the Old Continent ordering the National Football Leagues to end their championship. On pain of seeing their country write off the next editions of the Champions League and Europa League.

"We are convinced that football will be able to restart in the coming months, respecting conditions which will be dictated by the public authorities, and believe that any decision to abandon national competitions is, at this stage, premature and not justified", is it written in the letter signed by the president of federation Aleksander Ceferin, as well as by the representative of the European Association of the clubs (AEC) Andrea Agnelli, and that of the European Leagues (EL), Lars-Christer Olsson. "Joint management of the calendars is strictly necessary because the conclusion of the current season must be coordinated with the start of the news, which could be partly affected by the overload (of matches)".

End of competitions in July and August

The C1 and C3 were officially suspended on March 17, just like almost all of the national championships in Europe (almost, because Belarus has not yet announced anything). Since then, a group has been working within UEFA to assess the legal, regulatory and financial problems caused by the sudden cessation of the sport. They are also making plans to resume competitions beyond the scheduled completion of the 2019-2020 seasons, after June 30.

"Their work is now focused on scenarios covering the months of July and August, including the possibility that UEFA competitions will resume after the completion of the national leagues," said the missive.

Otherwise, sanction

The rest of the letter sets out the sanctions for non-compliance with the directives imposed. “It is essential that even a disruptive event like this epidemic does not prevent our competitions from taking place on the field, in accordance with their rules and that all sports titles are awarded on the basis of the results. UEFA reserves the right not to admit clubs to participate in UEFA competitions in 2020-2021, in accordance with the applicable regulations. "

These words, reported by the Associated Press agency, come a few hours after the Belgian football league has raised the possibility of putting an end to the championship, by validating the current classification as final classification. In the flat country, Bruges dominates the debates, with 15 points ahead of its dolphin Gent. But if the leader is banned from Champion's League, he will sit on the minimum 30 million euros promised by UEFA in the event of qualification. Suffice to say that to continue, the teams must follow the recommendations of the main European body. The promised carrot is far too large.
