Rome (dpa) - Italy is considering extending the current season until autumn due to the Corona crisis.
In an interview with Rai Sport, the president of the FIGC football association, Gabriele Gravina, did not rule out playing until September or October. That is one of the "hypotheses" that are under discussion, he said.
"In this way, we could avoid affecting not only the 2019/20 season, but also the 20/21 season," explained Gravina. Because without a regulated degree, the coming season could also be burdened by an "avalanche of legal disputes".
The date of May 17 for a restart of Serie A will also remain in the game for the time being. Gravina emphasized that it was all theoretical considerations. Nothing was decided.
After the Italian government last week extended anti-corona measures such as exit bans until April 13, the Italian football association first repeated its hope to start again in late May. Serie A had been interrupted on March 9 with twelve remaining match days.
However, the president of the Italian first division club Brescia Calcio, Massimo Cellino, has already spoken out against promptly resuming the Serie A games. He recently called such plans in the newspaper "La Gazzetta dello Sport" "irresponsible". Lombardy and especially the provinces of Brescia and Bergamo are particularly badly affected by the corona virus.
