Schongau - It was a special honor for Benjamin Völker. The 16-year-old Schongauer was invited by the German Handball Federation to the competitive sports sighting in the Olympic base in Heidelberg. The nomination and participation in the course were the reward for the hard work in the past two years after Völker had moved from the TSV Schongau training association to Herrsching. It was not enough for an immediate appointment to the national team, but Völker is nominated for the squad of the BHV selection.

Völker opts for handball

"So you can say with a clear conscience that Benni is one of the best players in Bavaria and also belongs to the elite in southern Germany," says Herrschings youth leader Max Kilzheimer about the junior high school student. Völker started playing handball at TSV Schongau ten years ago. At the same time, he chased football at TSV Altenstadt. At 13, he decided to concentrate entirely on handball. In the Schongauer C youth under coach Tanja Rösner, Völker regularly stood out with ten or more goals. This accuracy made the Herrschinger aware of the talent, who ultimately managed to guide him to the Ammersee. He continues to live in Schongau.

In the first season there, the son of the former Schongau women's coach, Markus Völker, came as a C youth to work for the older ones in the B youth. There he took on more responsibility in the Landesliga. So the BHV talent classters became aware of the 1.90-meter back room player, who names the Danish international Mikkel Hansen as his role model. In addition to his three training sessions in Herrsching, selection training courses were also held every two weeks. This effort paid off.

The Schongauer organizes up to five training units per week

In the past season, the right-hander in the B-youth of the Herrschinger, who played in the Bayernliga, developed more and more into a top performer. "Our trainer, Christian Kofler, taught me a lot," Benjamin Völker praises the work of the former Bundesliga player (Schwabing and Milbertshofen). In the meantime, the various throwing variants and what to do in the defense have passed into the flesh and blood of the Schongauer. The so-called elite selection training at the Oberhaching sports school also contributed to this. "And sometimes I also train with my buddies in the Schongau team," added Völker. On average, he has five training units per week. Not least because of this diligence in training, Völker became an absolute scorer in the Bayern League. With 108 goals in 16 games, he ended the season in second place on the scorers list.

In the coming season, the Schongauer wants to score many goals in the Bayern League for the Herrschinger B youth team. "Then we want to try to get into the youth Bundesliga," said Völker. His big dream is to play in the highest German handball league as an adult - maybe even with his favorite club, the Füchsen Berlin. Until then, however, the primary school qualification is in the foreground this year. After that, Völker wants to go to technical college. His main focus remains on handball. "If you have high goals, you have to be able to subordinate other things," says Max Kilzheimer. "Anyway, we're excited to see where Benni is going."
