Cologne (dpa) - After the extraordinary decision to continue the league operations with only ten teams and in a kind of tournament mode, the work for those responsible for the basketball Bundesliga is just beginning.
As early as April 28, a group of experts with representatives of the clubs that will continue to work will begin to work out the exact course of the daring project. Because unlike professional football, basketball players do not yet have a detailed concept.
"DFL boss Christian Seifert said on Thursday that football is ready. I am confident that we can say that in a few days," said BBL managing director Stefan Holz of the German Press Agency. The league boss managed to develop an idea in a few days that convinced the 17 league representatives. The clubs unanimously decided on Monday to continue the season that had been suspended since mid-March due to the Corona crisis - even though seven clubs will no longer participate.
FC Bayern Munich, MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, Hakro Merlins Crailsheim, Alba Berlin, EWE Baskets Oldenburg, Rasta Vechta, Brose Bamberg, BG Göttingen, ratiopharm ulm and Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt want to continue the season in two groups of five. "We need the green light from politics by May 18 at the latest," said Holz. Then, after a two to three week preparation period, the German champion should be chosen within three weeks. The exact mode has not yet been determined.
The first reactions to the plan were positive. "It can be awesome," wrote Ulm's managing director Thomas Stoll on Twitter. National player Johannes Thiemann also sees the idea positively. "Up until now, it has of course been difficult to motivate yourself again and again, but now you have another goal in mind," said the Alba Berlin Center to dpa. Now the basketball players are waiting for the approval of politicians and authorities. Even if the responsibility does not seem very clear. "If we only knew that," said Holz.
