  • The clubs of the women's Bundesliga and the 3rd league also receive 7.5 million euros in funding.
  • The DFB invites you to an extraordinary Bundestag for May 25, where further decisions are to follow.

Munich - The dispute over a continuation of the season in the 3rd league recently threatened to get completely out of hand. The DFB hoped for an agreement between all clubs, but this was never possible. In the middle of the discussions, the DFL put together a financial aid package. On Monday evening, the third division teams voted with a narrow majority for the season continuation. We give an overview of the events of the past weeks.

The beginning of the dispute among the third division clubs

On Thursday,  April 16, the Bavarian clubs of the 3rd division demonstrated their agreement about the continuation of the season. They made it clear that there was no alternative to continuing the season.

The counter followed a day later. Eight clubs, all of which would benefit from a season break, including SV Waldhof Mannheim , published a joint statement calling for this scenario. The clubs emphasized that football, especially in the third division , must not claim a special role.

The DFB warned and called for the cohesion of all clubs. “Public confrontations damage the third division and its clubs, regardless of the content of individual opinions. In addition, they do not contribute to solutions, they only complicate them, ”said  Tom Eilers , Chairman of the 3rd League Committee . The discussions continued to simmer.

DFL decides on 7.5 million aid funds

Last Thursday, the decided DFL a relief fund for the 3. Liga and the Women's Bundeslig a . The package comprises 7.5 million euros and is financed from the Champions League participants' own funds around FC Bayern . A total of 25 clubs will participate equally in the fund, so that each club will probably  receive 300,000 euros . Teams from DFL clubs, including FC Bayern 2 and the women's team of the record champions, waive their share. The TSV 1860 and SpVgg Unterhaching, on the other hand, can look forward to financial support.

Claus Schromm had the idea of a distribution key. According to the Hachinger trainer model, clubs with more spectators would receive higher amounts. However, a decision of the DFB Presidium , which was made unanimously, stipulates that the costs for the tests are paid centrally from the pot. The further distributions should be made pro rata after each match day. DFB President Fritz Keller praised the help of the DFL as a "strong act of solidarity".

Corona death in the vicinity of SV Waldhof Mannheim

Last weekend  Markus Kompp , the managing director of SV Waldhof Mannheim , announced that there was a corona death in the immediate vicinity of a player as early as the end of March . The second in the table was confirmed in its call for a season break.

Some representatives of other third division clubs found this approach bad. They accused the Mannheimers of misusing the tragic death for their own purposes. “From a moral point of view, everyone should judge for themselves that your statements, the causa game continuation in the third division, now take precedence over the expertise of the medical task force of the DFL, and that you position the tragic incident in your club in terms of sports policy,” said  Günther Gorenzel , managing director of TSV 1860 , in an email.

Vote on the continuation of the season

The DFB invited representatives of the 20 third division clubs to a video conference on Monday . With a narrow majority of 10: 8, with two abstentions, the clubs spoke out for a continuation of the season. The  DFB vice-president Peter Frymut h said: "The result of the query is to be respected by all and accept. Even if the picture is not uniform, there is a majority opinion among the clubs as to what should be done in the event of a change in the official disposition. ”The Bavarian clubs unanimously voted for the continuation, as did  Eintracht Braunschweig , Hansa Rostock , KFC Uerdingen , Viktoria Cologne and Chemnitzer FC , which changed its mind compared to the previous days and weeks.

The 1. FC Kaiserslautern and SV Meppen abstained. The remaining clubs voted to cancel the season. Including the leaders MSV Duisburg , although he spoke in favor of a season continuation. "Should it be played, it should not lead to a distortion of competition. This means that there must be no suspension of the descent. Each point and each place must be as important as before, "said sports director Ivo Grlic in a club announcement. Since this point was not clearly regulated, the zebras voted " no ".

Peace not in sight yet

Eilers , the chairman of the 3rd league committee , was satisfied with the result, but criticized the way the clubs dealt with one another: “We have gone through an intensive discussion process (...), in the course of which, unfortunately, the appropriate tone was lost in some places has gone. I now have the wish and clear expectations that more objectivity, honesty and calm return in the spirit of the common cause. "

The fulfillment of this wish remains to be doubted. There will be further problems for the 3rd division . For example, the city of Halle has banned ghost games. There is also uncertainty as to when the season will start again and by when it could be played to the end. Some of the teams are currently in small group training, but eight teams have not yet returned to training.

DFB announces extraordinary Bundestag

Exactly how to proceed will be decided after a message from Thursday, May 25th. From 1 p.m. the DFB is asking for an extraordinary Bundestag, which will be carried out virtually. The 262 delegates should participate in digital form and thus also be able to exercise their voting rights, as the DFB wrote. The central theme of the Bundestag is the impact of the crisis on German football.

"There will therefore be advice and resolutions on the implementation and continuation or the possible termination of DFB playing classes, including the necessary decisions on promotion and relegation and the necessary changes to the statutes," it said. This affects, among other things, the 3rd division, the women's Bundesliga and the 2nd women's league.
