The return of the Bundesliga was postponed. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and federal heads of state held a video conference on Thursday to discuss the impact of the Corona virus on the country and on sports in particular.
Last week, the German Football Association announced that it would be ready to return to action on May 9, adding that the final decision was not in her hands but by the politicians and indeed, the politicians decided to postpone the resumption of games. The decision to open the league will be decided at a hearing set for May 6, when the closest date for the return of the games will be no earlier than May 16.
The Bundesliga has posted on Twitter that the league and clubs will continue to prepare for the resumption of games during May. Earlier this week, officials told ESPN that the clubs were confident the league would return in May regardless of what was decided at the video conference held today.
In the German league, 9 cycles remain to end the season. The teams continue to practice in small groups but have not yet returned to full training and some coaches have argued that at least ten full training days must be conducted before returning to the official games.
