Munich (dpa) - The final tournament of the basketball Bundesliga to determine the German champions takes place in Munich. This decision was made by the Presidium of the Basketball Bundesliga and BBL GmbH.
Munich prevailed with its application against Berlin, Frankfurt and Bonn, who had also expressed their interest in hosting the event. "In total there were four high-quality applications," said BBL managing director Stefan Holz. Munich was "the famous tip of the nose" in the front.
Unlike in ice hockey or handball, where the seasons were canceled due to the Corona crisis, the Basketball Bundesliga wants to end the season with ten of 17 teams. Over a period of around three weeks, the champions will be determined in two groups of five with subsequent playoffs. The BBL has developed a hygiene and safety concept for this. However, it still requires the approval of authorities and politics.
"First of all, it speaks for itself that four applicants have campaigned for an orientation and thus for our sport," said Bavaria's Managing Director Marko Pesic after the vote. One now hopes with all involved that "the responsible authorities approve the security concept of the BBL" The league must have received approval by May 18 at the latest, "in order to be able to implement the planning, including training and quarantine phases".
In addition to Bayern Munich, the MHP giants Ludwigsburg, Hakro Merlins Crailsheim, Alba Berlin, EWE Baskets Oldenburg, Rasta Vechta, Brose Bamberg, BG Göttingen, ratiopharm ulm and Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt will play for the title. The season has already ended for all other clubs.
