While DFL boss Christian Seifert is confident that he is well prepared for a Bundesliga restart after the Corona break, the example of Dresden shows how thin the ice is. A commentary by sports editor Manuel Bonke.

  • The corona crisis continues to frown in professional German football.
  • Christian Seifert, head of the German Football League, gives the impression of being well prepared for the restart.
  • The majority of the population is against a restart - some Bundesliga professionals too.
  • tz sports editor Manuel Bonke comments on the situation.

Christian Seifert is without question the man of the hour in German football. The head of the German Football League (DFL) always gives the impression during his numerous TV appearances that he is prepared for all eventualities with regard to the upcoming Bundesliga restart during the Corona pandemic - also and especially because of the much-quoted DFL Hygiene concept. As you know, this was created in close consultation with politicians and the healthcare system under the direction of national team doctor Tim Meyer and has only one goal: to end the Bundesliga with ghost games.

Corona crisis: Hygiene concept could not prevent cases of Dynamo Dresden

But even the hygiene concept, which was so highly praised on all sides, could not prevent the second division club Dynamo Dresden from having to go into a two-week quarantine with its entire squad including coach and supervisor after two further Corona cases. "In the past few weeks, we have made an enormous effort, both in terms of personnel and logistics, to strictly implement all the prescribed medical and hygienic measures," says Dresden's sports director Ralf Minge, sounding somewhat reproachful towards the DFL.

That is exactly the point: Up to the present, DFL boss Seifert and the club bosses of the largest German clubs, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Hans-Joachim Watzke, have done almost everything right to ensure a restart date for the Bundesliga . But even this powerful trio, always armed with the DFL hygiene concept, is not immune to one crucial thing: the spread of the virus.

The example of Dresden shows how thin the ice on which German professional football is currently moving is. Anyone who has always preached responsible handling of Corona to players and fans in the past few weeks must do so themselves.

If it turns out in the next few days and weeks that, despite the hygiene concept, the health of players, coaches, coaches and their families cannot be guaranteed due to the resumption of play, the restart of the Bundesliga must not be pushed through at all costs.
