Dusseldorf (dpa) - Sports Director Lutz Pfannenstiel from Bundesliga club Fortuna Dusseldorf calls for a rethink in all areas of football.
"The entire business has to question itself. There can and must not be a" keep it up "," said Pfannenstiel in an interview with the German Press Agency. "We need more sustainability, down-to-earthness and, above all, humility."
It is important that "these lunar amounts in the transfer and salaries drop to a healthy normal level," said the 47-year-old. "Society rightly takes a critical view of these insane sums. This has led to an estrangement from football." Pfannenstiel initially believes in a normalization after the Corona crisis. "And I hope that this is sustainable development, and that the sums won't rocket again sometime."
But the behavior of everyone involved in public is also important, said Pfannenstiel, who played as a goalkeeper on all continents. "Now we are all challenged so that professional football does not burst like a soap bubble, but will stand on a sound foundation in the future. And that includes a certain external image," he explained.
After many conversations he had the feeling "that it was an effective shot in front of the bow. We have all noticed how quickly professional football, to which everyone is looking up, can start to crumble. We should never forget that : It can always go the other way - and it can go quickly. "
