Sports figures to the rescue of the French cheese industry

THE SCAN SPORT - Many players in French sport participated in an action to support the consumption of PDO / PGI cheeses and the cheese heritage heavily affected by the coronavirus crisis.

"So that France, the country of a thousand cheeses, retains its know-how, together we support our cheese makers, our terroirs our producers, get involved with us." In front of his smartphone, Aimé Jacquet calls in a short video relayed on social networks. Like twenty figures in French sport, the former coach of the Blues de France 98 wanted to engage in a campaign to support French cheese producers severely impacted by the coronavirus crisis.

Retired from the world of sport or still in activity, these personalities participate in the campaign "Support our cheeses, our terroirs and our producers" alongside actors, scientists, chefs or authors, imagined by the National Federation of Producers de Lait (FNPL), the National Sheep Federation (FNO) and the National Federation of Goat Breeders (FNEC). This hundred signatories relayed this call to avoid the loss of thousands of tonnes of quality cheese (PDO and PGI) that remained confined and whose shelf life is limited.

For 80% of cheeses, the shelf life does not exceed eight weeks and even for some, less than a month. In overstock, these foodstuffs will be unfit for consumption and intended, in the worst case (part of the stocks may be donated), to be destroyed if they do not flow through the distribution channels.

"It is important to support the country, our producers, our cheeses and our soils," says Tessa Worley, the skier from Grand Bornand (Haute-Savoie), a great lover of Reblochon. The emergency measures launched with the support of some local authorities and solidarity campaigns have already made it possible to reduce the surplus production by 1,000 tonnes, while sales collapsed by 60% between March 15 and April 15 .
