Madrid (dpa) - The Spanish professional football leagues are allowed to resume play from 8 June. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced this in a speech to the nation. The permit is valid for the Primera División and also for the second division.

The La Liga plans to restart on June 12th. However, there is still no concrete schedule with dates.

Game operations in Spain have been suspended since March 12th. In the Primera División, FC Barcelona with world soccer player Lionel Messi and the German national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen are in first place after 27 of a total of 38 rounds with 58 points. Second-placed Real Madrid with national player Toni Kroos is only two points behind, while FC Sevilla, in third place with 47 points, have very little chance of winning the title.

With more than 230,000 infections and over 28,000 deaths, Spain is one of the hardest hit countries by the coronavirus pandemic. According to the La Liga, eight of around 2500 players and employees of clubs in the 1st and 2nd league were recently tested positive for the corona virus.
