Nick Jäger also took notice of the second event of a virtual racing series. This time, the 20-year-old runner of TSV Penzberg caused a sensation over 5 kilometers.

Penzberg / Ingolstadt - Nick Jäger also performed exceptionally well in the second run of the "Virtual run2gether Challenge". The 20-year-old national team runner of TSV Penzberg finished 26th in 15:14 minutes over 5 kilometers, making him not only the best German but also the fastest non-Kenyan. The victory went to Geoffrey Githuku Chege, who clocked a world-class time with 13:33 minutes. "However, the Kenyan had chosen a downhill route, which explained his significant increase in performance compared to his best time," said Penzberg spokesman Markus Brennauer. At the start of the virtual racing series, Jäger had improved his personal best over 10 kilometers by a whopping 1:44 minutes (30:46). During this time, the 20-year-old achieved an outstanding eighth place among around 150 starters.

Athletics: Many runners at TSV Penzberg feel the strain of the three-week training camp

The other Penzberg runners Tom Jäger (15:58 minutes, 37th place), Lucas Herbeck (16:30, 40th) and Markus Brennauer (16:50, 45th) all stayed well above their best times. According to Penzberg's spokesman, this was mainly due to the fact that everyone had completed their race “completely out of training”. "For Nick, Tom and Lucas, the 5-kilometer race was the last tough stress at the end of a three-week training block," said trainer Melanie Jäger. Nevertheless, everyone expected faster times, said Jäger.

Athletics: On the third of the five rounds, Nick Jäger's legs will be heavy

After his 10 kilometer best time two weeks earlier, Nick Jäger had set a time of 14:45 minutes, which would have been 20 seconds slower than his best time on the track. Accordingly, he started his run on a flat asphalt circuit south of Ingolstadt in sunshine and 18 degrees and covered the first kilometer in 2:55 minutes. There followed a kilometer with 2:57 minutes, then one with 3:01 minutes. But from kilometer three "the tired and heavy legs became clearly noticeable," says Markus Brennauer. The result: The speed at Jäger dropped significantly, which was also noticeable in the lap times (3:06 and 3:08). "Of course I'm not at all happy with the time," says Jäger, "but given the many hard training kilometers in the days before, I can live with it to some extent."

Athletics: Tom Jäger from TSV Penzberg is plagued by side stitches during his run

His older brother Tom used the flat paths on the Danube in Ulm, just like he did during the 10-kilometer run. At 15:58 minutes, he was about 30 seconds above his best time. According to Brennauer, this was mainly due to the fact that he had side stitches in the end. "I had big problems especially on the third kilometer," said the 22-year-old. At 3:18 minutes, this was by far the slowest 1000-meter section. It started with 3:07 minutes, followed by 3:09 minutes. In the end, Jäger caught himself again and leveled off at 3:10 minutes.

Athletics: Grass pollen slows down Lucas Herbeck from TSV Penzberg

On the other hand, Lucas Herbeck described his 5-kilometer run as a “catastrophe”. The Penzberger had chosen a flat asphalt course right on his doorstep on the Loisach in Penzberg. “I ran the first two kilometers in 6:24 minutes. Then I had problems with my lungs and slowed down significantly, ”reported Herbeck. Like many pollen allergy sufferers, "he felt the full force of the grass pollen and had to reduce his pace significantly," said Brennauer. Nevertheless, Herbeck did not accept his allergy as an excuse. After all, he had run well under 16 minutes, "which is why he was very disappointed with his time," said TSV spokesman Brennauer.

Athletics: Markus Brennauer misses his personal best in the pouring rain - and is still satisfied

Brennauer, on the other hand, was significantly more satisfied, even though he was 16:50 minutes, almost a minute above his best time. The 40-year-old Penzberger had his best time on the track ten years ago. For the “Virtual run2gether Challenge” he chose the path on the Ammer east of the Wörther Ammerbrücke in Peißenberg. With six degrees and pouring rain, he mostly ran on gravel roads. "Since I could not exercise properly for almost ten weeks due to a tendon injury, I am very satisfied with my performance," said the completely soaked Penzberger. He had trained a lot of mountain running recently and had often walked at the highest possible pace, "because the tendon didn't hurt," said the junior high school teacher.

The third run of the "Virtual run2gether Challenge" follows on the last weekend in May. The athletes have to run for an hour and cover as many kilometers as possible. The series is organized by the Austrian association "run2gether". It was founded in 2009 and offers running camps for German and Austrian runners in Kenya and also supports Kenyan athletes financially. The Jäger brothers went to the training camp in Kenya with "run2gether" at the turn of the year. The virtual running series supports the initiative of the association. Participation is five euros. The association (www.run2gether.com) wants to secure the livelihood of the Kenyan runners during this time.
