Berlin (dpa) - According to the "New York Times", this year's Champions League final is to be relocated to another location due to the corona pandemic from Istanbul. The sheet named an unnamed person who was familiar with the process as the source of the report.
A spokesman for the European Football Union (UEFA) said when asked by the newspaper that a number of options were being considered and that no decision had yet been made. A working group with representatives from leagues and clubs discussed dates and formats so that the current Champions League season could still be concluded. A decision is due to be made after a meeting of the UEFA executive scheduled for June 17, and UEFA's talks with officials in Istanbul should be completed next week. The Turkish metropolis could therefore come into play at a later date.
The Champions League final was originally scheduled for this Saturday in Istanbul, the Europa League final in Gdansk was to take place on May 27. Most recently, August 29 and 27 were considered possible new dates. Spanish media had speculated about Lisbon as a possible new venue, where the remaining games of the competition could also take place as ghost games. The Champions League had been interrupted in March after the first four round of 16 second legs. RB Leipzig is in the quarter-finals, the return leg of Bayern against Chelsea is still pending. But first the national leagues are to be ended.
