Dorfen - The ESC Dorfen has a new trainer, and he is well known in the district: Franz Steer was a favorite with the ice hockey rival in Erding for a long time, as well as Bundesliga defender in Berlin and at EV Landshut, with whom he became German Champion in 1983. After his time as a professional, the Geisenhausen-born team coached in the 2nd and 3rd leagues (Erding, Rosenheim and Dresden).

The content was quickly agreed with the experienced head coach, said ESC Vice President Markus Lauffer. However, due to the corona crisis, which is still not foreseeable when the Bayern League begins, some details had to be agreed beforehand.

Steer will also focus on promoting young people. The aim is to offer regional junior players a perspective in the senior teams of the ESC and, if necessary, to pave the way for higher-level tasks. With his many years of sporting and human experience, the 61-year-old hopes to show new ways to success and to promote the passion for ice hockey in all teams.

To this end, last year new concepts were specified and paths were followed for the ESC young talents and implemented in cooperation with the ESV Gebensbach with ten licensed junior trainers. As a result, all young teams were able to achieve top positions in the demanding league section. That was also thanks to coach Jan Smolko who, despite the frequent shortage of personnel, easily managed to keep up with the U 20 juniors in the Bayern league and provided four players and a goalkeeper for the ice pirates in the Bavarian league.

The ESC squad will start the new season without foreigners for the time being. This is not a new starting point, said Steer, but a challenge that was gladly taken on. The proximity to his place of residence in Geisenhausen and the sustainably successful work of the responsible ESC organizers are always motivation for him to take on the task in Dorfen.
