Bochum (dpa) - VfL Bochum has continued its latest successful streak in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Revierclub won the duel between the former first division clubs with FC St. Pauli 2-0 (1-0) and has now been unbeaten for eight games in a row.
Robert Zulj (15th minute / penalty) and Maxim Leitsch (73rd), who came from Hoffenheim during the winter break, gave Thomas Reis' team their third home win in a row at the start of matchday 30. While VfL got rid of all relegation worries with 39 points, the Hamburgers have to look further down.
The best second division team after the Corona interruption had everything under control for almost the entire season in changeable weather with rain showers and violent wind. After Zulj's first goal for Bochum - Leo Östigard fouled VfL captain Anthony Losilla in the penalty area - the hosts offered further chances to score. Milos Pantelic (24th) and Danilo Soares (50th) were the losers against good Hamburg goalkeeper Robin Himmelmann.
St. Paul had the best opportunity to equalize shortly before the break. But the shot of the Japanese Ryo Miyaichi (42.) only smacked the crossbar. Even after the change, coach Jos Luhukay's team remained harmless in the game. Bochum's young central defender Leitsch was even able to celebrate his first goal with the professionals after a corner.
