Munich (AP) - With its professional teams in football and basketball, FC Bayern Munich is setting an example in the fight against racism and for more tolerance, respect and humanity.
At the Bundesliga game of the German record champions in Leverkusen, the opening game of the basketball players at the Bundesliga final tournament in Munich in the evening and on Sunday when the soccer women were away in Potsdam, the players would warm up shirts from the club's campaign "Red against Racism" wear, the association said.
The "Black Lives Matter" movement would also be supported with a special black ribbon. Bavaria President Herbert Hainer (65) justified the cross-club action to take a clear stand against racism following the violent death of George Floyd as a result of a police operation in the United States. The action came from the team, said trainer Hansi Flick on TV channel Sky: "This is what distinguishes the team by saying that we want to set an example."
"FC Bayern, with all its teams, all its players from different nations, with all its members, partners and friends, stands for a world in which racism, discrimination, hate, injustice and violence have no place," said Hainer the homepage of the record champion. The death of Floyd was shocking for everyone at Bayern, said Hainer: "It's about being active and showing your colors."
Flick praised the campaign as a "clear statement" from the club. "In today's world, it is extremely important to keep pointing out what is going wrong," said the 55-year-old.
