It is rare for other Bundesliga clubs to keep their fingers crossed for FC Bayern. It's different in the DFB Cup semi-finals - here's why.

It is rare for other Bundesliga clubs to keep their fingers crossed for FC Bayern. It's different in the DFB Cup semi-finals - here's why.

  • The FC Bayern * receives in the German Cup semi-final Eintracht Frankfurt
  • Bayer Leverkusen plays in the second semi-final against 1. FC Saarbrücken
  • If both favorites win, a European Cup seat will be free

Munich / Saarbrücken - FC Bayern is series champion * in the Bundesliga * - which is one of the reasons why Munich is often not particularly high on the popularity scale with most supporters of other clubs. At least for a game, that should change now. But why?

DFB Cup: Bayern and Bayer wins mean another European Cup place

This is based on the following: If FC Bayern or Bayer Leverkusen win the DFB Cup , an additional seventh European Cup place will be free because both have already qualified for international competition. Seventh place would then entitle you to participate in the Europa League * qualification

There are currently five clubs in the race for places six and seven: VfL Wolfsburg (6th), TSG Hoffenheim (7th), SC Freiburg (8th) and with outsider chances for FC Schalke 04 . In theory, Eintracht Frankfurt could still be seventh, but the Eagles are eight points behind in four games remaining.

DFB Cup: FC Bayern receives Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen meets Saarbrücken

The five clubs mentioned (with the Eintracht six) hope for victories of FC Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen. The team of Hansi Flick is visiting Frankfurt Eintracht, which has developed into a real cup team in recent years. The crowning glory was the title in 2018. Despite this, Bayern are currently the clear favorites due to their outstanding condition. They were also favorites in the race for Timo Werner - but they were most likely the losers against Chelsea.

Caution is advised in any case: This team is only a fourth division on paper ...

The favorites in the second game are even clearer: Bayer Leverkusen are dealing with sensational semi-finalist 1. FC Saarbrücken. Yet never before had a team from the fourth division to the Cup semi-finals made - anything but a Leverkusen victory would be a small earthquake. However, the Saarlanders have already kicked out two Bundesliga clubs (Cologne and Düsseldorf) and two second division clubs (Karlsruhe and Regensburg). Coach Lukas Kwasniok takes the task with humor: "It's good that we only have Bayern in the final," is the challenge to opponents Leverkusen.
