Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - The German Football Association has rejected the criticism of Bayern coach Hansi Flick regarding the termination of the DFB Cup matches.
"The approach followed the usual principles. The decisive factor here is the equal treatment of all teams in order to guarantee the greatest possible equal opportunities," a DFB spokesman was quoted by the "Bild". "In particular, the long game break of 1. FC Saarbrücken had to be taken into account and also that the finalists had the longest possible preparation time with a view to the final," it said.
The coach of the German record champion had described the fixtures as "unfortunate" after a 2-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt and said: "Perhaps one could have made a semi-final similar to the Champions League plan after the round, to focus completely on the championship. " He said this internally from the start, "but unfortunately nobody at the DFB came up with the idea to implement it. That's the way it has to be accepted."
Bayern will meet Bayer Leverkusen in the final on July 4th in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Leverkusen had prevailed in the semifinals with fourth division club 1. FC Saarbrücken, who had not played for three months due to the corona-related mandatory break and the termination of the season in the Regionalliga Südwest.
