Good and bad news for OM. As might be expected, the Marseille club was penalized by the European financial gendarme for its breaches of financial fair play obligations. This is bad news. The Judging Chamber of the Club Financial Control Commission (ICFC) has indeed condemned Olympique de Marseille to a fine of 3 million euros. That's not all. The club chaired by Jacques-Henri Eyraud will be deprived of 15% of the sums collected during its next European campaigns, in 2020-21 therefore, and possibly in 2021-22… if it is qualified. Last but not least, OM will only be able to line up 23 players (instead of 25) until the 2022-23 season.
The good news ? UEFA did not pronounce exclusion from European competitions against OM. Second in the Ligue 1 ranking at the end of this 2019-20 season shortened due to coronavirus, the 1993 European champions will therefore find the C1 in 2020-21, as expected. Like the Parisian French champion, they are even automatically qualified for the group stage, while the third, Rennes, will have to go through qualifications. Finalist in the Europa League two years ago (defeat against Atlético Madrid, in Lyon), Olympique de Marseille has not disputed the most prestigious cup in Europe since the 2013-14 season. A bad memory, with… six defeats in six group matches.
