Ligue 1: Ruffier laid off by Saint-Etienne

2020-07-15T23:57:35.343Z

According to the Team, the goalkeeper of Saint-Etienne was laid off by his club. A new episode in the deterioration of relations between the two

The tension, already palpable, between Stéphane Ruffier and his Saint-Etienne club, who will meet PSG on Friday July 24 in the final of the Coupe de France, has further escalated. As the Team indicates on Tuesday, the 33-year-old international goalkeeper (3 caps) has been laid off as a precaution by his club. He would be accused of being late in training last Friday. It was an employee of the club who gave him a letter in person signifying her sanction on Monday. But Ruffier trained normally on July 14, waiting to receive a registered letter. He will be received by his management on July 22.

This episode seems to constitute a new step towards a divorce between Ruffier and Saint-Etienne where he arrived in 2011. With 383 games played, he is also the goalkeeper most capped in the green jersey, in front of Ivan Curkovic. If the goalkeeper still has a year of contract, the coach, Claude Puel, does not seem to count on him any more and did not retain him during the first two friendly matches, against Rumilly and Nice.

It is now the lining of Jessy Moulin

In recent months, Ruffier had received several unfavorable signals from Puel. The first in late February, when the coach had decided to dismiss him against Reims (1-1). Ruffier then refused to blow on the bench. His agent, Patrick Glanz, then attacked Claude Puel publicly and vehemently. Saint-Etienne had decided to file a complaint against him.

In May, Puel had warned Ruffier that it would be Jessy Moulin, his historical lining, who would start the season in the incumbent costume. The departure of goalkeeper coach Fabrice Grange, who had been looking after him for eight years, helped further isolate Ruffier.

His future with the Greens has therefore further darkened. The separation seems inevitable between the two parties, even if the guard will defend his interests. But a layoff would allow Saint-Etienne to save a big salary and separate from a player who no longer fits into his coach's plans.
