2020-07-23T18:15:43.871Z

The first French channel has acquired from RMC Sport the unencrypted co-broadcasting of the final of the European event on Sunday 23 August in

This is the big comeback before the time of the Champions League on TF 1. Five years after the end of the broadcast of the prestigious event of European football on the first channel, the One will broadcast the final of the edition in clear 2020, Sunday 23 August at 9 p.m., as announced on Thursday 23 July by the TF 1 group in a press release, confirming information from L'Equipe. The match played at the Luz Stadium in Lisbon (Portugal) will be commented by the duo formed by Grégoire Margotton and Bixente Lizarazu.

TF 1 has reached an agreement with the Altice group, the parent company of RMC Sport, which holds the broadcasting rights for the competition for the period 2018-2021 and which will therefore also broadcast the final. The entire Final Eight - an unprecedented format set up due to the health crisis linked to Covid-19 -, organized behind closed doors from August 7 to 23 in Lisbon, will, on the other hand, be visible only on the pay channels of RMC Sport. . But the regulations of UEFA, the European organizing body which manages the Champions League, require that the final be broadcast in clear in France, whether there is a French club present or not.

TF 1 acquired the rights to the final from 2022

In 2019, the 100% English final between Tottenham and Liverpool (0-2) had thus been broadcast on BFM TV, despite the contrary opinion of the Superior Audiovisual Council (CSA). The latter believed that the channel "devoted (e) to information, including economic and financial information" was not intended to broadcast a match live. BFM had finally done so before receiving a formal notice from the CSA to comply with its agreement and a threat of sanctions in the event of a repeat offense. The final had gathered 2.5 million viewers on its antenna.

TF 1 can legitimately hope to attract many more people in front of the screen, especially if PSG or Lyon are in the game. In the quarterfinals, the Parisian club will face the Italians of Atalanta Bergamo on August 12 in the quarterfinals. His Rhone counterpart must still play the round of 16 return to Juventus Turin on August 7.

From 2022, TF 1 will be guaranteed to broadcast all the Champions League finals for three seasons. The group acquired the TV rights to the final in November 2019 during UEFA's last call for tenders.
