Maurizio Sarri: Out after just one season
Photo: MARCO BERTORELLO / AFPThe Italian champions Juventus parted ways with their coach Maurizio Sarri a day after leaving the Champions League. Juventus announced on Saturday. The club had set winning the premier class as their goal for the season, but were eliminated on Friday despite a 2-1 win in the second leg of the second leg against Olympique Lyon. Juve lost 1-0 in the first leg in Lyon. For the first time in three years, the club missed the quarter-finals.
It is still open who will succeed Sarri. Sarri had only taken over the job at Juventus from Massimiliano Allegri last summer. In the Italian Serie A, the 61-year-old had led the club to the ninth championship in a row.
"The club would like to thank the coach for writing a new page in Juventus history by winning the ninth Scudetto in a row," said Juventus' statement. The championship also crowned Sarri's career. Sarri had hardly won any titles in his career. In 2018/2019 he had triumphed in the Europa League with Chelsea.
Juventus had also had the goal of winning the Champions League in recent years. The rather defensive style of play Allegris did not lead to success. With Sarri, Juve got a coach who wants to play a dynamic, fast-paced combination football - in Italy Sarrismo, in England called Sarriball. Little was seen of this tactic during the season, partly because Sarri lacked the players for his system.
The team often seemed to be dependent on Cristiano Ronaldo's goals. So also in the 2-1 win against Lyon. After the end in the premier class, the days of the sarrismo experiment in Turin are now over.
