Wout van Aert at the Milan-Sanremo race
Photo: MARCO BERTORELLO / AFPAt the beginning of March the spring classic Milan-Sanremo was canceled, with more than four months delay the race took place in midsummer conditions. Temperatures of well over 30 degrees accompanied the drivers on the way from Lombardy to the Mediterranean.
After 305 kilometers the Belgian Wout Van Aert prevailed against last year's winner Julian Alaphilippe from France in the sprint. The two had pulled away a few kilometers from the finish and crossed the finish line just before the first pursuers.
Due to Corona restrictions on through-town traffic and the holiday season, the route had to be changed significantly compared to previous years. The 130 kilometer long section on the Ligurian coast had to be omitted.
But the final stayed the same. After the climbs of Cipressa and Poggio, the arrival took place on Via Roma in Sanremo.
