Collin Morikawa won a major on the PGA Tour for the first time in his career. The only 23-year-old American showed outstanding golf on the final round of the PGA Championship in San Francisco and won after a round of 64 with two strokes ahead of his compatriot Dustin Johnson and the British Paul Casey.

Morikawa took a total of 267 strokes over four days at the $ 11 million event at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. In the meantime, seven golfers shared the tour on the final day.

"It's great. That was a goal in life for me," he said afterwards to the US TV station CBS. "I felt very good from the start." A little mishap happened to him while cheering. When he raised the trophy in the air, the lid fell to the floor. There were no spectators at the event because of the pandemic.

The preliminary decision in the narrow field was an eagle on the 16th hole when he placed the golf ball with an impressive tee shot just a few meters from the hole and then remained calm. He had previously taken the lead on the 14th hole with a chip from about twelve meters. "That was the one time that I would have wished there were spectators," said Morikawa.

The success in his home state is Morikawa's third on the PGA tour. He is now in fifth place in the world rankings. Only six players ahead of him got their first major win before their 24th birthday.

One of them is called Tiger Woods and is now 44 years old. After three mixed rounds at the start, he had no chance of winning, but ended the competition at least with a 67 round. The only German starter, Martin Kaymer, had failed on the cut after a strong first and a weak second day and was no longer active on the weekend.

The major, originally planned for May, was the first golf tournament in the most important category this year due to the long Corona break.
