Winds in Russia are stormy tonight (Monday) after former Russian national team player Roman Shirokov punched referee Nikitia Danchenkov during a showcase match held as part of an amateur tournament held in the country. Danchenkov fell to the country after the beating and suffered bruises around his eye, and according to reports in Russia plans to file a lawsuit against Shirokov.

Roman Shirokov, 39, has played for senior clubs in Russia, including six seasons at Zenit St Petersburg which in the media recorded 130 appearances and scored 29 goals. The player also played for Spartak Moscow, CSKA, Himki and Kazan. Shirokov also made 57 appearances for the Russian national team, during which he scored 13 goals. The player won the Russian league championship three times during his career, reaching the Euro 2008 semi-finals with Russia.

The game was attended by local journalist Dmitry Agurov, who even filmed the event and uploaded it to social media, along with photos of Judge Danchenkov after receiving medical treatment. Shirokov himself has not yet responded to the incident.
