Weilheim / Penzberg - If someone has won the German championship three times in a row in a discipline, they should actually be deeply disappointed with fourth place. Not so with Johannes Trefz: The 28-year-old from Weilheim in the service of TSV Graefelfing could live well with his placement over 400 meters at the German championships in Braunschweig.

For Johannes Trefz it was clear: The 2020 season was "by far my most difficult", as the Weilheimer reports. The 28-year-old has really had tough times. For months he struggled with an inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which affected him until mid-June. Then persistent back problems set in, which dragged on until shortly before the start of the German title fights. Trefz therefore asked himself whether it “makes any sense at all to go to the start”. It was clear to him from the start that “I could not live up to my own standards,” as the 28-year-old writes on his Instagram account.

Athletics: Johannes Trefz declares the season over

The three-time German champion (2016, 2017, 2018) missed a medal over 400 meters in Braunschweig, but Johannes Trefz was satisfied in the end. With a time of 46.40 seconds, he ended up fourth. The 28-year-old was 28 hundredths of a second too slow for the bronze medal, but he still spoke of a conciliatory end to the season. In his estimation, he now needs “three to four good weeks of training and two to three 400 meter races” to reach his usual level. “This season, however, cost me so much strength to fight my way back from the injuries that I decided to end the season,” said Trefz. With a time of 46.40 seconds, which he achieved in the final in Braunschweig, the Weilheimer usually started a season. He is confident about the future. He also has big goals: the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, the European Championships in Munich in 2022.

Dissatisfied: After a new personal best in the semifinals, Andreas Kölbl from TSV Penzberg had expected more hurdles over 400 meters in the final.

Athletics: Andreas Kölbl does not find his rhythm in the 400 meter hurdles final

The two athletes from TSV Penzberg left the Braunschweig Eintracht Stadium far less satisfied than Trefz. Andreas Kölbl, for example, who finished seventh over the 400 meter hurdles. With his time of 52.76 seconds, however, he was not at all satisfied. Because in the semifinals he ran a new personal best with 52.61 seconds. For the final he had hoped for another increase. In the decisive run "he came to the first hurdle with the unloved right leg," said Brennauer. As a result, Kölbl could not find his rhythm. Actually, like in the semi-finals, he wanted to get to the first hurdle with his left leg and then risk everything. According to his own statement, his new best time in the semifinals was very easy for him, "actually too easy", as Brennauer noted. Measured against this time, fifth place would have been possible for the 25-year-old Sindelsdorfer in the final. In the end it was only seventh. But this placement is also a great success, according to Brennauer, because never before had an athlete from TSV Penzberg made it into a final at the German athletics championships for active athletes.

Nick Jäger "very unhappy" after his performance over 3000 meters obstacle

If there was disappointment at Kölbl, the mood of his club mate Nick Jäger was a bit worse. The 21-year-old was "very unhappy" with his appearance in Braunschweig and place eleven over 3000 meters obstacle, said Brennauer. The 21-year-old never really got into the race. The whole time he stayed at the end of the field. When the pace was increased after two kilometers in this tactical race, he could no longer follow. "He had no more strength and had to let the runners go," reported Penzberg's spokesman. Therefore, Jäger resigned relatively quickly and the race only ended easily. According to Brennauer, this also explains his bad time of 9:14.37 minutes.
