Freiburg (AP) - National player Luca Waldschmidt is moving from SC Freiburg to the Portuguese first division soccer club Benfica Lisbon.
"Muito obrigado (thank you very much) and take care, Luca", wrote the people of Breisgau on their website. They did not provide any information about the replacement modalities.
The 24-year-old came to Freiburg from Hamburger SV in 2018 and has since scored 16 goals in 53 Bundesliga games. In October 2019, the offensive player made his debut in the national team. His contract with the sports club originally ran until 2022. At Benfica he will meet the former Dortmund player Julian Weigl, who has been playing for the traditional club since the beginning of the year.
"I really didn't make the decision to leave easy for myself because I know what I had at SC Freiburg," said Waldschmidt according to the club's announcement. "I am very grateful for the trust that the sports club has placed in me and have always tried to repay it. I will not forget that I was able to become a senior international here. Now I have decided to take the next step go, and look forward to the new task. "
