Lisbon (AP) - Franz Beckenbauer wants Thomas Müller to make a comeback in the German national soccer team.
"Thomas Müller should play for Germany again. Jogi won't break a point from the crown when he brings him back," said Beckenbauer (74) of "Bild". National coach Joachim Löw ended the careers of Müller, Mats Hummels and Jérôme Boateng in the German selection last year in the wake of the upheaval. A rethinking of Löw is still very unlikely.
Müller (30) is one of the best at Bayern Munich after a difficult phase under Hansi Flick's predecessor Niko Kovac. Since the furious 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-finals against FC Barcelona, the offensive player is the only German record player with 113 appearances in the premier class.
"Müller didn't have an easy time at Bayern either and sat on the bench for a long time. But you have to see that he has developed there too," said Bayern Munich's honorary president Beckenbauer. "Müller is now the absolute leader. His personality would definitely help the national team."
