The end of the story between PSG and Edinson Cavani, after seven years of relationship (2013-2020), should take an even more unexpected turn. At the end of his contract in Paris, the Uruguayan is preparing to commit to Benfica for a lease of two or three seasons. Cavani, 33, would even be expected in Lisbon (Portugal) in the coming hours to officially engage.
The wink is direct: it is in Lisbon and at the Luz stadium, pregnant with Benfica, that PSG climbed to the semi-final of the Champions League. A meeting that Cavani's former teammates will play on Tuesday evening (9 p.m.) against RB Leipzig, six days after eliminating Atalanta Bergamo (2-1) after a crazy match. The top scorer in the history of PSG (200 goals) could therefore see his ex-club reach the final of the C1. A competition that neither PSG nor Cavani have already won.
According to our information, the positions of the Cavani clan and Benfica have come closer in recent days. The runner-up in the 2019-2020 Portuguese championship begins a flashy sporting reconstruction for the coming season. Jorge Jesus, historic coach of the Lisbon club, is back. And Benfica has already announced the recruitment of Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen from Tottenham.
Almost 8 million euros per season
The big question revolved around the salary of Cavani, which touched nearly 15 million euros per season at PSG. The Uruguayan wanted to find a last challenge in Europe before possibly ending his career in his home country. Benfica have agreed to make financial efforts to attract one of Europe's best strikers to their ranks. Cavani could hit nearly € 8million per season in Portugal.
At PSG, the striker was informed in the spring of the decision of Leonardo, sporting director, not to offer him an extension. In return for this verdict, considered unfair, Cavani refused to accept the proposed two-month extension, in order to conclude the current season. PSG therefore won the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue without him. And is now approaching the first Champions League final in its history without its top scorer.
