Barcelona, the Spanish Premier League, has sacked its sporting director Eric Abidal, a day after the departure of coach Quique Setien following the historic 2-8 defeat by Bayern Munich and the exit from the Champions League.
The club said in a statement that it "would like to thank Eric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and positive and close relationship in all respects to the Barcelona family."
Former Barcelona defender and double Champions League winner Abidal held the position of sporting director for more than two years but left after one of the team's worst seasons in recent years, losing the league title to rivals Real Madrid.
Earlier this year, the former French player came under fire from Lionel Messi, who accused his former teammate of blaming the players after coach Ernesto Valverde was fired in January.
