The Olympique Marseille stadium will remain empty on Friday
Photo: BORIS HORVAT / AFPAfter further corona cases at Olympique Marseille, the opening game against AS Saint-Étienne has been postponed. The game, which was actually planned for Friday, should now be rescheduled on September 16 or 17, announced the French Football League. Olympique had confirmed three more infections in the morning. The number of cases in the southern French had risen to four. The club did not announce whether players of the professional team of coach André Villas-Boas are affected.
According to the French soccer league, a team is not allowed to practice team training for seven days if more than three players or supervisors are registered with a corona disease. Marseille had already waived a test match against Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart last Friday after a first suspected case became known.
It is also questionable whether the league games on the weekend can take place as planned. Nîmes Olympique, which is scheduled to receive Stade Brest on Sunday, reported two suspected cases on Tuesday. A total of eleven of the 20 clubs in Ligue 1 have reported positive tests.
In contrast to the four other major professional leagues in Europe, the previous season in France ended prematurely due to the corona crisis and Paris Saint-Germain was declared champion.
