New York-Sana
Former world number one Kim Clijsters announced today that she will withdraw from the Western and Southern Tennis Championships due to an abdominal injury, but expressed her hope to participate in the US Open championship scheduled for later this month.
Western and Southern will start next week in New York, a US Open pre-season scheduled between August 31 and September 13, in which the 37-year-old Clijsters will participate with an invitation card.
"I am disappointed that I withdrew from the tournament, but after consulting with my support team and the doctors, I need time to recover," Clijsters, who won the Western and Southern title in 2010, said in a statement.
Clijsters returned to tennis this year after an absence of nearly eight years from the sport.
