This is the result of a survey by the Tokyo Shoko Research Institute among 12,857 companies in the country. Accordingly, 53.6 percent spoke out against the games, 46.2 percent voted for it.
A survey in July among the Japanese population showed an even clearer result: 36.4 percent of those questioned were in favor of a renewed postponement, 33.7 percent for a rejection. Only 23.9 percent supported the planned event. A majority of the survey participants (75.3 percent) who had pleaded for a cancellation or postponement believed that the corona pandemic could not be contained so quickly.

Among the opponents within the Japanese economy, 27.8 percent were in favor of a complete cancellation of the second Summer Games in Tokyo after 1964, 25.8 percent wanted a further postponement. However, this is not currently an option for either the International Olympic Committee (IOC) or the Japanese government. Among the proponents, only 22.5 percent were for games as planned, 18.4 percent would like a slimmed-down edition. 5.3 percent of the companies are for summer games without spectators. This option is currently not a serious alternative either for the IOC or the Organizing Committee.
The Olympics in Tokyo were a blessing for parts of the Japanese economy. Since then, the national marketing program has generated three billion dollars, a good 2.5 billion euros, and 70 companies are involved at various levels. However, Corona is meanwhile also causing severe economic losses in Nippon; exports in July, for example, slumped by 19.2 percent compared to the previous year.
A record of 1998 new infections were reported in Japan earlier this month. So far, more than 60,000 people in Japan have contracted Covid-19, and 1159 deaths have been registered.
