Grove (AP) - The traditional English Formula 1 racing team Williams is now owned by a US investment company. Dorilton Capital, based in New York, bought the private team.
Williams has had significant financial problems for years, which were most recently exacerbated in the Corona crisis. In Dorilton Capital they have found a new owner, "who understands the sport and knows what it takes to be successful," said co-team boss Claire Williams. The investor also respects "the legacy of the team". The team's name and headquarters in Grove will remain.
The Formula 1 racing team Williams was founded in 1977 by team boss Frank Williams, the father of Claire Williams, and Patrick Head. The team won the constructors' title a total of nine times. The last drivers' championship was won in 1997 by the Canadian Jacques Villeneuve. George Russell and Nicholas Latifi are currently driving for Williams.
