Vaterstetten (dpa) - Favorite Carolin Schäfer has won the heptathlon unchallenged at the German all-around championships in Vaterstetten. The 28-year-old World Cup runner-up from 2017 from Frankfurt / Main collected 6319 points at the weekend.

The 20-year-old Malik Diakité from Hanover won the decathlon title with 7641 points. World champion Niklas Kaul from Mainz was only there as a ZDF co-commentator after his elbow operation.

Diakité was trumped on Sunday by Jannis Wolff (7670), who had only registered for the U23 classification and is therefore not considered a champion among the active players. Second place behind Diakité went to Jan Ruhrmann (Uerdingen / Dormagen) with 7601 points, ahead of Nico Beckers (Aachen / 7298).

All hopes of the favorite Mathias Brugger were dashed early. The 28-year-old from Ulm caused the second false start in the second 100-meter run on Saturday, he was disqualified. A protest by the third of the 2016 Indoor World Championships was later rejected.

"For the decathletes and heptathletes who were able to take part, it was of course very important that another competition took place, that you could compare yourself to other athletes and see that the training of the past few months has paid off," said Kaul .

Schäfer, who has been coached by Kaul's parents since last year, won her second national championship title after 2013. However, as expected, she remained well below her personal best of 6836 points in the competition without spectators. Anna Maiwald from Leverkusen came second with 6112 points ahead of Vanessa Grimm from Königsteiner LV (6047).
