"The time for a cut and then also a next step has come," wrote Aogo in the announcement, which "to be honest," was not that easy for him either. The defender was most recently under contract at Hannover 96.
Aogo completed his first Bundesliga game for SC Freiburg in October 2004. In 2008, the native of Karlsruhe moved to Hamburger SV. For the North Germans, he played 168 competitive games by 2013 and scored three times. During this time he also became a national player. Aogo completed twelve international matches for the DFB-Elf. When it came to third place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa against Uruguay (3-2), he ran for 90 minutes, most recently against the USA in June 2013.
After playing in the Bundesliga with Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart, he moved to Hannover 96 last season. Due to an irritation of the Achilles tendon, he was no longer used under the new head coach Kenan Kocak. At the end of January 2020, Aogo agreed on an early termination of the contract, since then he has been without a club.
Aogo left it open as to how things will continue for him off the pitch. "But anyone who knows me knows that I also need my professional challenges. More on that soon," he wrote: "THANK YOU for walking this path with me, it was incredible. And it will continue."
