Just before the age of 35, Lior Eliyahu retires from basketball. The veteran forward, who played for 16 seasons in the Premier League, has decided to hang up his shoes and turn to the next chapter in his life, and he is expected to convene an official press conference soon where he will summarize his career and give the considerations behind his decision.

Eliyahu is ranked 25th among all-time scorers in the senior league (4,346 points), with only Raviv Lemond ahead of the active players. He played for six seasons at Maccabi Tel Aviv, six at Hapoel Jerusalem, three at Hapoel Galil Elyon and another at Maccabi Ashdod, in the media he finished his career last season. In between, he also appeared for one season in Basconia, with which he won the Spanish championship.

The forward finishes his career with 140 international appearances for the Israeli national team, ranking in tenth place. He has participated in six European Championships in national uniform. His list of titles includes, in addition to the championship in Spain, also six championships in Israel, three state cups and one win in the Adriatic League. He scored 10.8 points per game in the Premier League and 9.1 points per game in the Euroleague (in 135 appearances).

Eliyahu's last action on the courts was actually in Ashdod's training at the end of February, when he was injured and suffered a crisis in his hand, shortly before the corona epidemic struck Israeli basketball. "They say a professional athlete dies twice: when he retires and when he actually dies. It's clear to me that some of me will die when I retire. It's something I do from age zero, and suddenly quit, it's not easy. But life does not end and I will find new challenges," he said in an interview with Walla! Sports on May 15th.

Asked if he is not frustrated with the possibility of ending his career in such circumstances, Elijah replied: "The next season will start when I will already be off the pitch for half a year. It's not a simple thing at my age. Derrick Sharp once said to me: 'Just worry about things you can change.' "One of these things is above me."

And what about the day after? "I have some ideas in mind. It's unhealthy to get to the end of my career without plans for the future," he explained at the time.

    - Stay connected to basketball?

"Could be, but in my opinion - no."
